While a skateboard typically rides on its wheels, it is also possible to ride a short distance on the space between the wheels, the "hangers." The hanger is the mechanism that attaches the skateboard to its wheels, and includes the axle. A "grind" is a trick where the board slides on its hangers on any rail or edge of a wall or curb. To get the board up onto the grind surface, you must already know how to "ollie," which is a basic skateboard jump and a prerequisite to most skateboard tricks.

Step 1

Identify an adequate grind surface. The grind surface may be a rail, curb or other raised object with a corner to provide riding room for the board's hangers. The grind surface should be horizontal and level with the ground.

Step 2

Ride toward the grind surface. Your riding speed will determine how long the grind trick can last. The faster you ride, the longer you grind.

Step 3

Ollie the skateboard onto the grind surface. Unlike other tricks, do not ollie too high above the surface as this will complicate the grind. Jump just high enough to land on it.

Step 4

Level the skateboard in mid air before you land on the grind surface. You want the board to hit the surface flat to minimize problems with your balance that could cause you to fall or bring the grind to a halt.

Step 5

Push down on the skateboard so it lands on the surface. If you selected a good grind surface, such as a rail or a sharp curb, it should be easy to ensure the wheels do not touch the surface and the board lands on its hangers.

Step 6

Ride the skateboard as it grinds on the surface.

Step 7

Push down on the tail of the skateboard as the grind slows down or you approach the end of the rail or curb.

Step 8

Jump off the grind surface just as you would any other riding ledge or curb, using the pressure on the back of the board to keep it level as you maneuver back to the ground below.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have never performed a grind before, you may find it easier to learn on a grind surface that is lower to the ground, such as a curb.
  • Always wear a helmet when you learn new skateboarding tricks to avoid serious injuries from falling.
