The BMX bike is one of the easiest bikes to ride when compared with other types. BMX stands for bicycle motocross. The Merriam-Webster dictionary states that BMX racing resembles motocross with dirt tracks and jumps with special, heavy-duty bicycles. BMX bikes can be used as casual cruising bikes, for dirt-track motocross or for freestyle trick riding, where riders do tricks and jumps. The simple design, small tires and compact frame enable BMX bike riders to do a wide array of moves that are not possible on mountain bikes or other types.

Ride a BMX Bike

Step 1

Grab the handlebars as you straddle the frame of the BMX bike, making sure not to push the bike forward. Sit down on the seat and maintain a solid grip on the handlebars while your feet are still planted, making sure not to roll.

Step 2

Lift your feet off the ground on to the pedals, and begin pedaling forward to make the bike move. Turn the handlebars with your hands to make the bike turn the way you want it to go. Lean to the side you want to turn to if you want to make a gradual drifting turn.

Step 3

Press your feet backward on the pedals to slow the bike or stop it. According to the Bicycles Are Us website, a BMX bike has only rear brakes.

Step 4

Jump the bike by squatting down, placing pressure on the pedals and lifting quickly with your hands on the handlebars, raising the bike off the ground. Both wheels should lift off the ground and land roughly at the same time.

Step 5

Accelerate as you approach a ramp to jump the bike in a horizontal motion. Ride the incline and lift the front wheel as you hit the edge to get the bike airborne for a jump.

Step 6

Raise both feet off the pedals, continue to raise them until they are parallel and push both legs over the handlebars to do a "Bar Hop" trick while rolling at a moderate speed. According to the BMX Tricks Now website, you keep both hands on the handlebars and move your hips forward until you are sitting on the handlebars. You can stand on front pegs if your bike has them installed on the front fork.

Tips and Warnings

  • Maintaining speed will prevent you from tipping over. Going too slow causes the bike to fall. Slowing can be done by simply decelerating. Using the brake is not always necessary to slow down.
  • Always wear a helmet, as riding a BMX bike can be dangerous. Wear wrist guards to prevent hand and wrist injuries when you fall. Make sure the bike is not moving as you straddle the frame to get started.
