Sweet oil, also known as olive oil, is the main ingredient in several home remedies, including remedies for snoring and earaches. When using sweet oil, it's important to keep in mind that it isn't approved by medical professionals as a treatment for any conditions. If your symptoms are severe or sudden, you should see your doctor instead of using sweet oil home remedies.

Earaches

Sweet oil has long been used to ease earache pain in small children. Often, earaches point not to a full-blown infection, but rather to an ear canal that's been plugged with earwax. Warm the bottle of sweet oil between your hands, then use an eyedropper to deposit two drops of the oil in your child's ear. The oil may soften the wax enough to be expelled from the ear. Sweet oil should not be used as a substitute for a doctor's care, particularly if you suspect an ear infection is the cause of the pain. Additionally, if your child's eardrum has a hole in it, the oil can actually carry bacteria into the middle ear and cause a serious infection. Placing a damp, warm washcloth over the child's ear will often ease the pain and soften the earwax just as well, and it doesn't carry infection risk.

Snoring

Sweet oil is an old home remedy for snoring. The theory behind it is that swallowing sweet oil right before you go to bed lubricates your throat, keeping that loud and often annoying vibrating at bay. Simply swallow 1 tsp of sweet oil before lying down. However, you should be aware that snoring can be a symptom of a greater problem, such as sleep apnea, and sweet oil will not treat that condition. Visit your doctor to make sure there isn't a serious problem.

Dry Skin

Sweet oil can help lock moisture into dry skin, and is often an ingredient in body creams. After you've bathed and patted your skin completely dry, pour about 1 tsp of sweet oil into your palm and smooth it over your body, paying special attention to particularly dry areas such as your heels and elbows. You can also dab a small amount of sweet oil on your clean, dry face each night to keep it fresh and moisturized. Make sure to test the sweet oil on a small patch of skin before putting it all over your body. Allergies are rare, but they can happen.
