Large breasts can cause health problems for patients of any age and either sex. Called macromastia in females and gynecomastia in males, enlarged breasts can affect the patient's physical and emotional well-being, says MayoClinic.com. Women with large, pendulous breasts may find some relief of their symptoms by losing weight, strengthening their muscles and wearing a supportive bra. Treatment of breast enlargement in males depends on the cause, which may include puberty, hormonal imbalances, medications, recreational drugs or underlying diseases, according to MedlinePlus from the National Institutes of Health. Surgical breast reduction may be appropriate for patients of either gender.

Pain

Patients with large breasts often experience chronic or long-lasting pain that affects their quality of life, notes MedlinePlus. The weight of the breasts can cause pain in the neck, back and shoulders. Some patients also experience headaches due to oversize breasts.

Nerve Problems

The disproportionate size and weight of the breasts can cause poor posture that leads to chronic nerve problems, says MedlinePlus. Nerve problems are manifested in tingling and numbness in the hands and arms during the day as well as at night.

Restricted Activity

Large, pendulous breasts can limit the patient's ability to lead an active life, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Playing golf, practicing yoga, running and many other physical activities may be difficult to perform for the large-breasted patient. These restrictions, as well as poor body image and self-consciousness, can prevent the patient from enjoying the physical and emotional benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

Skin Problems

Individuals with large breasts often have yeast infections, skin rashes and irritations under the breasts because it is difficult to keep these areas dry, notes MayoClinic.com. Skin rashes and infections are particularly bothersome in warm, humid weather. Other skin issues include stretching of the skin on the breasts, scar-like streaks or striae, deep grooves or indentations on the shoulders from bra strap pressure and enlarged areolas--the brown areas around the nipples.

Emotional Health Issues

Low self-esteem, self-consciousness and poor body image are as important to the patient's well-being as physical issues, according to the ASPS. Having disproportionately large breasts often affects clothing choices, comfort in social situations and in the bedroom. Teenagers of both sexes are especially vulnerable to teasing by their peers and feelings of not fitting in because their bodies are different from what is considered to be the norm.
