A breast pad is a small, round cotton pad that is used after you give birth to absorb leaking breast milk. Leaking through your bra and shirt can be embarrassing, and breast pads help prevent that. Sometimes, after you breast feed, some milk will continue to leak out. Also, if you are out and hear another baby cry it can trigger your milk to let down, and cause leakage. Breast pads are convenient and simple to use.
Step 1
Pull open the flap on your nursing bra, or pull the cup away from your breast if you're wearing a regular bra. Clean any milk off your nipple with warm water, then pat dry.
Step 2
Place the breast pad over your nipple, then cover with your bra. Repeat the same process on the other side.
Step 3
Change your breast pads as they get wet, or after you are finished nursing, to avoid infection. Throw away disposable breast pads and launder reusable pads before using again.
Tips and Warnings
- You can use a folded tissue inside you bra if you run out of pads.
- Launder reusable breast pads with hypoallergenic soap to help avoid irritation or infection of your nipples.
