A career objective is a short one or two sentence statement included on resumes. It is usually near the top, just below your contact information. The objective summarizes your job search intentions and states why you are qualified for a position. A potential employer will probably read the objective before the rest of the resume. Whether or not he decides to continue reading may depend on how well you write your career objective.

Step 1

Include the specific job title in your objective if you are applying to a posted position. By focusing on a particular job, you demonstrate that you have researched the company and you know what positions are available. If you are going after an entry-level position that has not been posted, narrow your objective by stating the exact department in which you are interested.

Step 2

Construct a statement that incorporates the job title with words summarizing your applicable experience. Add at least two other descriptive qualities you have that are needed for the job. For example, you could say, "Experienced technical writer seeking a Marketing Director position that requires initiative and creativity."

Step 3

Complete your career objective by briefly stating why it is in the employer's best interest to hire you. For instance, your final objective could say, "Experienced technical writer seeking a Marketing Director position that requires initiative and creativity to promote new brands and increase company revenue."

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid using terms that are vague and generic. Show that you know exactly what you are looking for and how you can fulfill the job requirements.
  • Always proofread your career objective along with the rest of your resume. Potential employers will not waste their time with applicants who do not take the time to submit an error-free resume.
