Over time, styling, coloring and even frequent shampooing can strip out your hair's natural oils, leaving your hair feeling dry and looking damaged. Hair in this condition may have numerous split ends or be frizzy and unmanageable. To regain your smooth, glossy locks, you'll need to restore the missing oils. Create your own customized blend of hair-repairing oils and rejuvenate your hair at home without expensive store-bought hot oil treatments or trips to the salon.

Step 1

Pour 1/2 cup carrier oil into a glass jar. Olive, coconut, jojoba and almond oil are all appropriate options. Add 5 to 10 drops each of any combination of essential oils such as rosemary, lavender, geranium, sandalwood, rose or frankincense. Optionally, break open two vitamin E capsules and add the contents to the carrier oil. You can also add 1/2 cup of dried rosemary leaves to the oil mixture.

Step 2

Place the lid on the jar and shake the jar to blend to oils. Let the mixture rest in a cool, dark location for 24 hours. When you're ready to use the oil, pour it into a heat-proof container and warm it slightly on the stove or in the microwave oven. Strain out any rosemary leaves you added. Place a drop of oil on your wrist or hand to test the temperature.

Step 3

Brush or comb your hair thoroughly until you can run your fingers through it without hitting snags. Brushing helps distribute your hair's natural oils and it removes any remaining tangles that would make hair inaccessible to the oil treatment. Leave your hair dry before brushing. Dry hair absorbs oil better than wet hair.

Step 4

Separate out a small section of your hair. Dip your fingers in the oil and massage the oil into the section of hair, starting from the ends. Work upward, saturating your hair to within an inch of your scalp. Repeat with more sections of hair until all your hair is saturated.

Step 5

Blow dry your hair for 1 or 2 minutes to help your hair absorb the oil. Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap. Wet a towel in hot water and wring it out until slightly damp. Wrap the towel around your head to add more heat. Leave the treatment on for 45 minutes to 2 hours. Shampoo your hair thoroughly to remove all the oil.

Tips and Warnings

  • Place a towel around your shoulders to protect your clothing from oil. Design your dry hair remedy to suit your fragrance preferences. Blend rose and lavender oils in jojoba oil for a relaxing floral aroma. Combine frankincense and sandalwood in coconut oil for a more exotic scent.
