Proactiv began as an acne treatment promoted only through infomercials and has grown into the top-selling acne-fighting system in the United States. Created by two dermatologists, Proactiv promises not only a cleansing method that works to prevent acne, but adds an ongoing support system by specialists dedicated to helping clients with their overall skin care. Although Proactiv is not available through retail stores, it continues to thrive as a successful product in its approach to acne treatment.

Acne

The body naturally keeps skin lubricated by releasing oil. Sometimes, this oil becomes trapped under the skin surface and if it builds up, bacteria begin to grow. Acne is the result of the inflammatory process that occurs when the body is fighting the bacteria. The skin may become red and slightly swollen. A white head appears when white blood cells, the bacteria-fighting cells of the body, rise to the skin surface.

Process

According to Proactiv, its cleansing system is named because of its proactive approach to treating and preventing acne breakouts. The Proactiv system heals acne through a three-step process by the use of a cleanser, toner, and moisturizing cream. For best results, use of the three-step process is recommended to keep skin clean.

Effects

Proactiv works well when all three steps are performed regularly, both in the morning and at night. The Proactiv cleanser is massaged into the skin for 1 to 2 minutes, which cleans the skin while exfoliating dead skin cells and dirt. The second step of the system is the toner, which is applied to the face with a cotton swab. The toner works to remove remaining oil that can clog pores and leaves skin feeling refreshed and invigorated. The third step is applying a moisturizer that contains benzoyl peroxide, which is used to soften skin while treating existing acne.

Ingredients

Proactiv includes benzoyl peroxide, which is used to fight bacteria that clog pores and cause pimples. Proactiv also contains a component called Daily Oil Control, which acts as a sponge to soak up excess oil, according to Acne.com. Another chemical called SD Alcohol 40-B is used to disperse any oil on the skin surface. The Proactiv cleanser contains small particles of polyethylene, which helps remove excess oil, dirt and dead skin cells.

Considerations

Proactiv has been endorsed by several celebrities, including Mandy Moore, Avril Lavigne and Julianne Hough, who claim that it works well to keep skin clear from acne. The system must be used regularly to achieve results and eliminate future breakouts. Because Proactiv contains benzoyl peroxide as an ingredient, it may cause itching or swelling. Benzoyl peroxide can also make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so wearing sunscreen is recommended.
