Kerrville, Texas Area Community Colleges

Kerrville, Texas, is the home of a nationally recognized four-year institute. However, community college campuses in the area actually reside in the cities of Austin and San Antonio. The community colleges in both cities are large with multiple campuses allowing students to choose a campus close to them. The community colleges offer students opportunities to receive adult, technical and college preparatory education.

Geography

The Austin Community College has nine campuses in and around the city of Austin. The schools are approximately a two-hour drive from Kerrville. The Alamo Colleges are the San Antonio community college system. There are five campuses around San Antonio, which are approximately an hour from Kerrville.

Programs

Both community colleges offer programs that award associate in arts, associate in science and associate in applied science degrees. They also have certificate programs and adult education classes. They also have a 2+2 or University Link program in which students complete the first two years of a bachelor's degree at the community college and then transfer to a four-year institution. The four-year institutions have articulation agreements with the community colleges, making the transition smooth for the student.

Majors

The community colleges offer majors across different specializations including business, teaching, allied health and health. The Alamo Colleges have degree and certificate programs that include kinesiology, pre-medicine, nursing and medical assisting. It also offers training programs that includes certified nursing assistant. The Austin Community College system offers degree and certificate programs in health and kinesiology, health information technology, pre-med and sonography.

Special Features

The Alamo Colleges system has an education center in Kerrville. The center aims to bridge the need for community college services within the city of Kerrville. Offerings at the center include short-term training programs, college core courses, occupational training and summer youth programs. The Austin Community College system counts a weekend college and workforce education programs among its learning opportunities. It also has continuing education, community programs and an international business institute.

Student Life

To support student life, the community colleges offer extra-curricular activities that include clubs, organizations, sports and leadership development opportunities. Austin Community College has a chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success that regularly broadcasts speaker presentations aimed at helping students develop in both their personal and professional lives. In 2010, presentations have included financial and personal fulfillment topics. The Alamo Colleges campuses offer intramural and extramural sports that include soccer, baseball, and basketball.
