Doxycycline is a medication in a class of drugs known as tetracycline antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria in the body. According to Drugs.com, doxycycline is used to treat urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, periodontitis, and to treat the blemishes, bumps and acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should consult their health care provider prior to taking doxycycline as it may cause harmful effects to a developing fetus. There are several side effects associated with doxycycline.
Photosensitivity
Doxycycline may cause photosensitivity, or an increased sensitivity to the sun. This side effect may be more severe for patients taking a higher dosage of doxycycline. Users should take caution while outdoors in the direct sunlight and should avoid the use of sunlamps and tanning beds. Wearing protective clothing and sunblock may help protect the skin from sunburn.
Gastrointestinal Discomfort
Patients taking doxycycline may develop gastrointestinal discomfort. Symptoms can include mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or stomach upset. These side effects may be greater for those taking a higher dosage of doxycycline for the treatment of a severe infection. Avoiding spicy or fatty foods and eating smaller meals spaced throughout the day may help alleviate stomach discomfort. According to PubMed Health, those who experience stomach upset while taking doxycycline can take it with food or milk, although this may decrease the amount of medication absorbed from the stomach. Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea should be brought to the attention of a physician. It may decrease the effectiveness of doxycycline and lead to additional complications, such as dehydration.
Itching and Sores
Itching of the rectum or vagina may occur while taking this medication. Some patients may also develop sores or swelling in the rectal or genital area, explains Drugs.com. These side effects may occur as a result of the overgrowth of yeast, or candida. While doxycycline works to kill harmful bacteria in the body, it also kills some of the good bacteria in the body. Without enough good bacteria, certain organisms such as yeast may begin to grow. If vaginal itching is accompanied by redness, irritation, pain with intercourse, or a thick white colored discharge it may be a symptom of a vaginal yeast infection which requires medical treatment. Severe sores or swelling in the rectal or genital area should be brought to the attention of a physician.
