An overproduction of sebum is what leads to acne. This oil that is meant to lubricate the hair and skin sometimes gets clogged in the pores when there is too much of it. Mixing with bacteria and dead skin cells, the result is a series of red bumps commonly referred to as acne. Blackheads can also become a problem. Though smaller and less noticeable, blackheads are clogged pores that remain open. With the proper care of your skin, you can effectively banish acne and blackheads from your complexion.

Step 1

Use skin products that are noncomedogenic. Ensure that all products you put on your skin, such as lotions, sunscreens and cosmetics, are all water-based, because oil-based products will only further clog the pores.

Step 2

Bathe daily, making sure to pay special attention to acne-affected areas with an antibacterial soap. Bathe up to twice a day, but no more than that as excessive bathing may dry out the skin. Pat skin gently dry with a soft absorbent towel. Rubbing the towel over your broken-out skin too vigorously may irritate it, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Step 3

Eat more foods containing zinc, vitamin A, and L-carnitine. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes these complementary and alternative therapies may play a role in reducing acne. Talk to your doctor before consuming increased levels of vitamin A as this may be unsafe for those who are pregnant or those with known liver problems. Be sure to drink plenty of water during the day to keep your system flushed of unhealthy toxins.

Step 4

Wear light, loose-fitting clothing over acne-affected areas on the body. According to MayoClinic.com, sweating can spread existing bacteria around your body, making acne worse, so be sure to stay cool and drink plenty of water.

Step 5

Wrap areas of your skin that have blackheads with a towel and hold the area over a bowl of hot water. The towel will help to trap the steam in so it won't dissipate as quickly. Steam the affected area for 10 minutes before removing the towel and utilizing a flat blackhead remover. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for this helpful tool, which you can find at your local beauty supply store. Clean the area when you are done with alcohol pads and splash cold water over the skin to shrink the pores before more dirt and bacteria can get inside.

Tips and Warnings

  • Look for medicated products such as creams or skin washes that contain benzoyl peroxide. Start with the lowest percentage of benzoyl peroxide you can find to establish how your skin will react to it before purchasing and using product with higher percentages. If acne and blackheads are persistent and resistant to your efforts, talk to your doctor or dermatologist about prescription medications that may work for you.
  • Avoid picking at and popping pimples as this can lead to scaring.
