How to Put on a Mattress Protector

Allergy sufferers rely on mattress covers to keep allergens like dust, debris, dust mites and other microorganisms securely confined to the mattress fabric They provide a watertight barrier that also protects the mattress from spills, incontinence, stains and repeated contact with body soil. Apartment dwellers may use mattress covers to help stop and prevent bed bug infestations. You must properly install a mattress protector to maintain a snug fit while avoiding tears or damage that could render it ineffective.

Step 1

Strip your bed of all linens, including bed skirts and fitted sheets. Use this opportunity to wash your bedding.

Step 2

Stand at the foot of the bed and slide the mattress toward you about 2 feet. With help, push down on your end of the mattress while your partner lifts up on the back end. Your mattress should be standing up on its bottom edge. Ask your partner to hold the mattress up while you put on the cover.

Step 3

Unzip the mattress cover and slide the open end over the top of your mattress. Work it down slowly to prevent tearing. Gently work the cover over and down the mattress until you have it near the bottom. Pull it snug and smooth out any wrinkles or folds.

Step 4

Gently lower the mattress back onto the bed to the bottom 2 feet still hang off the end of the bed.

Step 5

Pull the cover down around the bottom edges of the mattress and secure the zipper.

Step 6

Slide the mattress back into position and replace the bedding.
