It's important to wear a karate gi correctly to avoid injury while practicing the martial art. An incorrectly worn karate uniform can restrict movements or cause you to trip and fall. It is also imperative to wear a gi properly to show your respect for the traditions and authority of your martial arts school. A sloppy or incorrectly worn uniform is considered disrespectful. Learning to wear a karate gi correctly is one of the first lessons taught to a martial artist.

Step 1

Start with a clean karate gi. Wearing a dirty or stained uniform is considered improper in the martial art. It is also unattractive. You should wash your karate gi after each use. Avoid bleach since that can weaken the fabric. Ironing is optional. Most wrinkling can be avoided if the karate gi is air dried.

Step 2

Shake all parts of the karate gi firmly with both hands before putting it on. This straightens out many of the wrinkles left in the fabric. It also separates the sides of the uniform that may have stuck together. Shaking it makes the fabric feel softer.

Step 3

Adjust the pants of the karate gi so they are loose fitting around the waist. They should be just tight enough to prevent them from falling down. Adjust the length so that the bottom of the legs hang at least two inches above the ground. If they hang all the way to the ground, you might trip and fall while performing karate techniques. If your pants are too long, roll the waistband down a few times to pull up the legs. Rolling the pant legs up is not effective since the cuffs fall out with every kick.

Step 4

Wear the top of the karate gi with the left lapel on top of the right lapel. This is extremely important. In Asia, only dead people wear the right lapel over the left at their funerals. Attach the sides of the karate uniform with the same knots you use when you tie your shoes.

Step 5

Bind the belt of your karate gi around your waist. A traditional wrap starts with the center of the opened belt on the middle of your stomach. Wrap both ends around your waist until they are both in front. Place the right side over the left and loop it underneath the entire belt. Loop that end over the other end of the belt and tighten. If you pull the knot tight enough, it won't open during class.

Step 6

Turn around and face away from the instructor and school flags when making final adjustments to your karate gi. Fixing your uniform while facing them is improper. Smooth out the wrinkles in your karate gi by yanking the bottom of the uniform down. Make sure the belt is not covered and that the knot is tight.
