Montgomery, Texas, is one of the oldest towns in Texas and is considered the birthplace of the Texas flag. In addition to its historic downtown district, Montgomery is an attractive destination because of the surrounding outdoor recreational attractions. Located on the edge of a national forest and close to man-made Lake Conroe, Montgomery offers a variety of year-round and seasonal outdoor activities for young children and their families.

Go Camping

If you want to camp out or just enjoy nature with your toddler, Sam Houston National Forest is only 8 miles from Montgomery. You can stay in one of three campgrounds with amenities such as water hookups, bathhouses and picnic shelters. Some of the campgrounds offer swimming in Lake Conroe. Fishing and boating also are available.

Visit the Park

Located in nearby Conroe, 7 Acre Wood is a 7-acre family entertainment park with many activities for toddlers and older siblings. Your toddler will especially enjoy the pony rides, the petting zoo and the large playground.

The park also includes a Western-themed play town and a mini-golf course. Watch for special events on the weekends such as family fun night and live music.

Downtown Historic District

Montgomery's downtown historic district includes many local gift and antique shops for adults. When your toddler needs a break from looking without touching, head to Cedar Brake Park just a few blocks away.

The park has a playground that's handicap-accessible and several picnic tables and grills. Your toddler might also enjoy the toys and dolls in some of the shops, and several offer boutique children's clothing.

Local Food

Like many farmer's markets, the monthly Farmer's Market in historic Montgomery is more than an opportunity to buy healthy local and organic food for your family. It's an adventure for small shoppers, with homemade crafts, local food and live music. Time your visit to coincide with the market if you can, which is held on the first Saturday of every month.

Your toddler will enjoy local food even more if he gets to harvest it himself. Some local farms offer pick-your-own harvesting depending on the season.

Educational Activities

There are several classes and educational activities for your toddler in the Montgomery area. Gymboree in College Park is an indoor play area for kids of all ages.

Gymboree offers classes for toddlers in movement, music and art. You can join to enjoy access to classes year-round, but you can also attend your first class free to try out their programs. Gymboree also offers party packages for members and non-members.

If your toddler enjoys listening to stories and music, check out the public library toddler time. The Montgomery County Public Library, in Conroe, offers story time for toddlers. The story sessions are 20 minutes long and are offered on Thursdays.
