Writing a resume for your current job or a new job will produce the same results: a clear, concise document that showcases your work experience, job responsibilities and achievements in an easily readable format. Your resume is a sales tool that highlights all of your career accomplishments in at least one page but less than two pages.

Step 1

Format your contact information and use your name as the main focus. Your contact information includes your full name, street address with city, state and ZIP code, current phone numbers and e-mail address. Avoid using a P.O. box.

Step 2

Write your summary statement which, according to the Job Center of Wisconsin, is "a brief summary of your best selling points." A summary statement should be brief. In one or two sentences highlight your current job title, years of experience and any pertinent skills or achievements.

Step 3

Brainstorm and write all relevant jobs in your work experience section in reverse chronological order. Each job should include the name of the company you worked for, start and end dates, job titles, responsibilities and achievements. Your most recent job is listed first.

Step 4

Add an education section that includes all schools you attended, dates attended and degrees received. Include majors and minors studied. A GPA can be listed if you have recently earned a degree, but this is not necessary.

Step 5

Add a section that highlights relevant computer skills and expertise. If this section becomes too lengthy, tailor the list to meet your job requirements. This section is optional, particularly if the job has no required computer skills.

Step 6

Add additional sections for relevant organizations, certifications, publications, honors and awards. These sections are all optional, but they can be effective in demonstrating any pertinent information you want highlighted or that was too lengthy to include in the work experience section.

Tips and Warnings

  • All headings should be capitalized in bold text. With the exception of the contact information, all text should be left-justified. Use strong action verbs, such as spearheaded or directed for impact.
  • Print and carefully proofread and correct your resume prior to distribution. Your eyes don't always catch mistakes on a computer screen, so you should print a copy and mark it. Then make changes on your digital copy. Follow all directions carefully for distributing your resume. Failing to follow guidelines can reflect poorly on you.
