Dristan is a nasal decongestant that comes in tablet form, liquid form and sprays. Dristan is used to relieve congestion because of colds, upper respiratory infections, allergy or sinus conditions. This medication can contain either oxymetazoline hydrochloride or acetaminophen depending on the form, along with many other active ingredients. As with any medication, side effects are possible. For safety reasons, consult with a physician because this medication should not be taken if other medical conditions exist and it should not be mixed with other medications.
Upset Stomach
A common side effect of Dristan is an upset stomach, which is usually mild and is relieved when the medication is stopped, according to Drugs.com. Diarrhea, gas and abdominal pain are other symptoms that can occur as well. Gastrointestinal problems occur in about 25 percent of patents who take this drug.
In severe cases, this medication can cause ulcers, internal bleeding or contribute to the development of colitis. Serious side effects tend to increase when the dosage exceeds 1,600mg per day.
Dizziness and Abnormal Heart Rate
Dristan relieves congestion by narrowing the blood vessels that reduce the pressure in the head and sinus cavities and it can cause multiple side effects. Taking this medication can cause drowsiness, dizziness, nervousness, headaches, insomnia, palpitations and it can make the pulse race or become too slow. If these symptoms are severe, the National Institutes of Health recommends contacting a health care provider immediately. Before taking Dristan, talk to a physician if you have any type of heart condition or high blood pressure.
Worsening of Symptoms
Dristan is designed to be used for only three or four days. Using the product longer could cause nasal congestion to get worse, warns the Mayo Clinic. After stopping the medication, the inflammation might return or become more severe then before starting the drug. If nasal congestion is chronic, other treatments might be more effective.
Liver Damage
The ingredient acetaminophen helps to reduce pain and fever. According to Dristan.com, taking more than 12 pills in one day could cause liver damage or failure. This complication can also occur if Dristan is mixed with other medications containing acetaminophen, or when consuming three or more alcoholic drinks per day while taking it. Patients with liver disease should talk with a physician before starting Dristan.
