The red, irritated bumps that occur after shaving your bikini line can make you uncomfortable and afraid to shave the area again. Known as razor burn, this condition occurs when your razor takes off not only the hairs on your bikini line, but also the top portion of skin, according to Dr. Evelyn Placek, a dermatologist featured in The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Women. To prevent razor burn, you must use the right tools and moisturizers.

Step 1

Trim the hairs on your bikini line using scissors or hair clippers before getting into the shower, according to Go Ask Alice, a health and wellness resource from Columbia University. Doing so can keep your razor sharper because it has to shave fewer hairs. Trimming the hairs also means you can perform fewer shaving passes to the area.

Step 2

Shower for at least five minutes before shaving the bikini line. The heat from the water helps to open the pores that contain hair follicles and softens the hairs, making them easier to remove.

Step 3

Lather a shaving gel or cream on the area and leave on for one to two minutes. This allows the hairs to further soften and the cream to moisturize the skin, according to Dr. D'Anne Kleinsmith, a dermatologist featured in The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Women.

Step 4

Shave the hairs in the direction of hair growth using a sharp razor. Shaving using a downward stroke helps to reduce irritation to the hair follicle, according to Kids Health.

Step 5

Rinse your razor after each shaving pass. This ensures fewer hairs are caught in the razor, allowing your razor to shave more hair each time you make a shaving stroke.

Step 6

Rinse off all shave gel and gently pat dry the area you just shaved. Dip a cotton ball in an astringent such as witch hazel and swipe it over the bikini line. This will help to prevent infection of the area by reducing bacteria, according to Go Ask Alice.

Step 7

Apply a moisturizer to the skin. Refrain from using moisturizers with heavy fragrances because this can be irritating to the skin.
