Nexium is a medication in a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. Proton pump inhibitors work by lessening the amount of acid produced in the stomach. According to Drugs.com, Nexium is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and to promote the healing of erosive esophagitis. It may also be used in conjunction with other medications for the treatment of stomach ulcers. There are some side effects associated with Nexium.
Bone Loss
Some patients taking Nexium may experience bone loss, which can increase their risk of developing fractures. According to Drugs.com, this side effect has occurred mostly in people who have taken the medication long term or at high doses, and in those who are age 50 and older. Patients with osteopenia, osteoporosis or a strong family history of bone disease should consult their physicians prior to starting therapy with Nexium or any proton pump inhibitor.
Headache and Drowsiness
Patients taking Nexium may develop headache and drowsiness. These side effects may lessen over time as the body adjusts to treatment with Nexium. Caution should be used while operating a vehicle or completing activities that require one to be alert and awake. A headache that becomes bothersome should be brought to the attention of a doctor.
Dry Mouth
Nexium may cause some users to experience dry mouth. The use of mouthwash, mints, or hard candies may help alleviate dry mouth. Routine dental care should continue while taking Nexium.
Stomach Discomfort
Stomach discomfort can occur in patients taking Nexium. Symptoms can include diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, gas or constipation, says Drugs.com. These side effects may lessen over time as the body gets used to treatment with Nexium. Small dietary changes may help alleviate stomach discomfort. Eating small meals and avoiding spicy, fatty, or fried foods can help lessen stomach discomfort. Severe or persistent diarrhea can lead to the development of dehydration and should be brought to the attention of a physician.
