Decorating a kid's playroom is an activity that can turn into a life experience for your child. If she is old enough to choose her own theme and colors, you can think of innovative ways to incorporate some of her favorite cartoon characters or interests into the decor, and she can invite her friends over for a decorating party. The most important thing is for the playroom's decor to represent your child's interests and personality so she can fully enjoy it.

Step 1

Choose a theme for the room. Depending on your child's age, the theme may include cartoon characters or interests such as cars, insects, animals or flowers. The theme should also include color schemes that appeal to your child.

Step 2

Look at a color wheel to compare options for paint colors and see what colors complement each other. Refer to your theme for inspiration as well. According to an article from Fox's iMag, red will give the room energy, green and yellow will generate a happy mood and blue will create a calmer mood. You may also choose a neutral color such as beige and use accessories to add the color.

Step 3

Paint the walls with the colors you have chosen. Children should paint only when supervised by an adult, as paint is toxic if ingested.

Step 4

Visit thrift stores and garage sales to look for fun accessories to alter and use as decor for the playroom. For example, you can paint an old mirror or make a collage on the frame that relates to the theme of the room. Buy old lamps and cut shapes into the shades to create fun projections on the wall, or find old fabric you can use to sew your own pillows.

Step 5

Install lighting that is warm and inviting so that your child and his friends feel comfortable spending extended periods of time in his playroom. Depending on the age of your child, you may want to keep all light switches and light bulbs that can get hot out of reach. Child-friendly lighting includes night lights for dark areas of the room and themed or bright-colored lamp shades.

Step 6

Place shelving at the entrance of the playroom that can serve as cubbyholes for your child's sweaters, shoes and other items while she is playing. Incorporate furniture with storage space, such as storage benches, to keep the room uncluttered, suggests the Let's Renovate website.
