Have you ever wondered if there was a more natural approach to keeping your skin healthy? Buying commercial lotions and ointments can be effective at healing problems with your skin, but they can also be loaded with unpronounceable chemicals, dyes and fragrances that can irritate your skin. If your looking for a treatment that is a little more "nature-friendly," try herbal skin therapy.

Mint

Mint is a common ingredient in many products having to do with the mouth. Toothpaste, mouthwash and breath fresheners make practical use of this common herb. It can also be good for the skin. According to the Organic Facts website, mint juice can be used as a natural skin cleanser that fights blackheads and other types of acne. Mint juice can also be applied to insect bites and bee stings to soothe the inflammation.

Calendula

Calendula is an orange-colored flower that is known for its beauty and its skin healing properties. You can use it as an extract, or turn it into a salve, and the essential oils from the herb are often used in organic/natural skin care products. When used on your skin, Medline suggests calendula is effective in treating dry skin, mild eczema and insect bites or stings. It can also be used as a salve for minor burns from sun exposure.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a very versatile plant that has been used to treat many conditions. Inside the plant is clear gel that can be used as a topical ointment for minor cuts and burns. Studies from the National Institute of Health say aloe is most commonly used to ease the pain and severity of sun burns. You can use the gel directly from the plant, without having to mix it with any other ingredients. In the commercial market, aloe is used in several skin care products including lotion, sunscreen and soap.

Rose Hip Tea

Drinking a warm cup of rose hip tea once a day can improve the overall quality of your skin, according to research from Herb Wisdom, a website about the health benefits of herbs. Rose hips contain high vitamin A and C content, which aids the skins regeneration process. When used as a toner, it also reduces inflammation in the skin.

Final Thoughts

Using all natural ingredients to soothe and heal your skin may help promote harmony and balance in your life and your environment. However, many holistic treatments have not been thoroughly studied by the FDA. Though most mild treatments are considered to be safe, it's important to speak with a health professional before beginning any new form of homeopathic therapy.
