The Professional Ski Instructors of America certification advisers developed a performance model based on specific ski skills. The skills include balance in constantly changing terrain, the ability to pressure and place your skis on edge to carve turn and the ability to rotate and steer your skis in the direction of the turn. Balance is a constant requirement. Edging or carving is most effective in groomed terrain, and rotary movements are required in powder and moguls.
The Carved Turn
Step 1
Stand at the top of the slope, with your body facing down the fall line. Flex your knees and press your shins against the boot tongue. Flex your elbows and bring them close to your waist. Keep your poles in front of your body.
Step 2
Flick your wrist and tap your right ski pole into the snow. Tip your skis so that you are on the little toe of your right foot and the big toe of your left foot.
Step 3
Steer the skis by pivoting your feet, so that they turn up the hill.
Step 4
Straighten your legs and flatten your skis. You will be facing the fall line. Repeat the process in the other direction.
Side Slip and Pivot Slip
Step 1
Go to the edge of the trail. Turn your skis across the hill so that they are parallel to the fall line, and turn your upper torso so that it is facing downhill. This is called a "countered" position.
Step 2
Place both of your skis on their uphill edges. Next, flatten the skis and let them slide down the hill.
Step 3
Roll your skis back on to their uphill edges. You will stop sliding. Practice the side slip a few times. When you feel comfortable, do a full turn and perform the side slip in the opposite direction. The side slip provides a safe alternative if you accidentally end up on a slope that is beyond your abilities. Adding a pivot prepares you for mogul skiing.
Step 4
Begin the side slip. Keep your skis flat, and then pivot them to the right. Repeat the side slip, and then pivot your skis to the left.
Tips and Warnings
- Unequal weight distribution might make you slide forward during the side slip. If you are sliding forward, equalize your weight by lifting your toes and flexing your feet. The pivot slip is effective preparation for mogul and powder skiing.
- Avoid jerky edge initiation during the carve.
