When you ride a bicycle, your body should be in a comfortable position. One of the biggest factors influencing your comfort level and control is the position of the handlebars. Handlebars help you steer the bicycle. If your handlebars are out of alignment, you can realign them.

Step 1

Sit on the bike seat and turn the handlebars so that the front tire is pointing straight forward.

Step 2

Look at where the handlebars connect to the frame and find the nut that keeps the connection tight. The nut may be on the top of the handlebars or where the handlebar head set--the vertical part of the handlebars--meets the frame.

Step 3

Use a wrench to loosen the nut. Top-mounted nuts usually require a hexagonal wrench, and side-mounted nuts must be loosened with a crescent wrench.

Step 4

Turn your handlebars so they are perpendicular to your straight front tire.

Step 5

Pull up or push down on the handlebars to get them to the correct height. The correct height should be in a place where your hands fit into a natural position in front of you and you are not bent over too much. You should naturally fall into the correct position for your height.

Step 6

Re-tighten the nut with the wrench, making sure they are securely fastened.

Tips and Warnings

  • Some handlebars are attached to the frame with a quick- release lever. If this is the case, open the lever by pulling it away from the head set to set your handlebars. Don't completely loosen the nut as you want some resistance when you are adjusting. The resistance will give you more control over the adjustments.
