The Banana Diet is an eating plan developed by a pharmacist named Hitoshi Watanabe based out of Japan. The diet was featured on a talk show and became so popular that the country suffered a banana shortage in 2008, according to a report by "Time" magazine. The premise of the diet is that eating bananas helps you lose weight by boosting your metabolism and aiding in digestion. According to the Every Diet.org website, you are likely to lose weight on the diet not necessarily from special properties that the bananas have, but in reducing calorie intake. It is important to speak to your primary care doctor before starting any new diet.

Step 1

Eat at least one banana for breakfast. There is no quantity restriction on the number of bananas that you eat on the diet. You are instructed to eat the bananas for your morning meal until you are full.

Step 2

Drink one glass of lukewarm water with breakfast. Room temperature water is the only beverage that may be consumed with meals.

Step 3

Consume a normal lunch and dinner. You are instructed to eat a normal meal for lunch and dinner with the only restriction being no dairy or alcohol in any of the meals.

Step 4

Snack once a day. No desserts are permitted after meals on the Banana Diet, but around 3 p.m., you can eat a small sweet snack of your choice.

Step 5

Keep an eye on the clock. You must have dinner before 8 p.m. on the Banana Diet. Another requirement is that you must go to bed before midnight.

Tips and Warnings

  • Although the diet does not require that you exercise to lose weight, you should still include a regular routine of aerobic activity. Work out at least 30 minutes per day with cardio exercise such as walking, swimming, cycling and/or jogging.
