During the first few months of life, babies tend to spit up after feeding. This is a normal part of the growing process. The Mayo Clinic reports that infant acid reflux occurs because the lower esophageal sphincter, a valve that controls the stomach contents, is underdeveloped. As baby grows, this barrier between the esophagus and stomach matures and functions correctly. Spit up, which may have odors from stomach acid, often leaves an ugly stain on clothing. Cleaning a spit up stain is not difficult if done before the stain sets.
Step 1
Brush off as much of the stain as possible with an old toothbrush if it has dried. If not, pat the area gently with a damp, clean cloth after removing the garment. Don't rub, just pat the stain.
Step 2
Lay the cloth out on a flat surface and sprinkle the stain with baking soda.
Step 3
Add club soda to the baking soda and allow the two substances to fizz over the stain for several minutes.
Step 4
Wash the garment in the washing machine using a detergent and warm water.
Step 5
Place the clothing on a flat surface and allow it to air dry. If the stain remains after removing the piece from the washer, repeat the process.
Tips and Warnings
- For old stains, soak the garment in a bucket full of warm water and a couple squirts of dish soap. Soak over night and then wash the garment in the washing machine. For a quick clean up, wipe the stain to remove surface debris. Put a drop of dish soap on the stain and scrub. Hold a fresh lemon over the area and squeeze to reduce the odor.
