Leading a family is an extremely busy and rewarding process. Raising children requires a routine and family schedule for daily life to run effectively---these things foster effective time management. According to the Raising Children network of Australia, research has shown that a family routine will let your children know what is important to your family. A family routine plays an important role in strengthening shared beliefs and values and it creates a sense of belonging and family cohesion. A family routine can also create a greater feeling of security and stability for a child.
Step 1
Write down a list of all tasks that must be completed by family members throughout the week. Include yourself and your spouse in this list. It is important to show the children team effort is needed to complete the tasks.
Step 2
Take a piece of paper and draw a chart showing days and times. Write down names of family members and what household chores they should complete. Setting a time to complete the tasks makes it vague and avoidable.
Time deadlines allow you to determine if household chores are being completed on time. According to literature published by Indiana University, children benefit when they have a consistent time set for working on household chores.
Step 3
Divide tasks evenly among family members. If you want to create family cohesion and a team mentality for a family schedule, all family members must contribute to household chores. If children see their sibling performing fewer household chores than they are, they may feel it is unfair and experience resentment.
Step 4
Reward children and all family members when a household chore is completed. The idea is not to simply point them to the next task. Foster a sense of enjoyment and achievement as your family schedule is being completed. Indiana University researchers say it is beneficial to allow children "brag time and encouragement" after completing a task. If your child has completed their homework, for example, show interest and allow them to read it to you.
Step 5
Include fun activities and social time into your family schedule. Adding enjoyable activities can be a good way of increasing motivation and making a family schedule more enjoyable. Fun time promotes family cohesion and provides a reward for doing the less enjoyable chores. The Raising Children Network of Australia say that a family routine built around fun, play or time together strengthens relationships between parents and children.
