Hyperactivity in children is not an uncommon issue. Many like to play tirelessly with their games and toys, sometimes even very early in the morning. Whereas the vast majority of children are full of energy a lot of the time, relentless activity by your child can make parenting very difficult. Some parents may even contemplate enrolling the hyperactive child in therapy classes to counter the problem. Such a measure is not required though. Accurately monitoring your child's diet can have a profound influence on controlling his mood and related behavior.
Step 1
Change the eating habits of your child. Reduce the amount of high sugar foods, especially candy and chocolate, to where they are an infrequent treat. Over-indulgence on all types of sugar act to increase energy levels to an often irrational and sometimes unstable way. Be particularly cautious of products that contain excessive amounts of glucose. This substance is responsible for abruptly elevating and declining the amounts of energy in your child's body.
Step 2
Replace soda pops with healthy drinks. The high sodium content of these drinks raises blood pressure levels, which increases hyperactive traits in adults and children. According to Rutgers University in New Jersey, "Current health advice warns against too much sodium. This warning is based on research suggesting that eating high amounts of sodium may contribute to the development of high blood pressure in certain people." Water, milk and pure orange juice are the best alternatives, as they contain only naturally balanced ingredients.
Step 3
Give your child a valerian supplement. It is a popular herbal remedy that is commonly used a relaxant, but has inadequate clinical data to clarify its effects. However, according to the University of Massachusetts, "Valerian contains several compounds that act to effectively relax the Central Nervous System." Purchase only capsules that consist primarily of valerian root, as it is this part of the plant which holds the vast majority of the nutrients.
Step 4
Do not give your child multi-vitamin and mineral tablets. Even the chewable products formulated especially for children contain B complex vitamins, which directly increase energy levels. Do not assume that because the amounts included are vastly reduced in comparison to adult supplements that they cannot relate to hyperactivity. If your child is prone to restlessness, even one tablet a day will intensify the problem.
Step 5
Ensure that your child gets enough sleep--definitely not too little, but equally neither too much. This inconsistency in sleep can cause moodiness which may be linked with the instability of your child's behavior. Although it is not always possible, try to prioritize keeping the sleep patterns as regulated as can reasonably be achieved. Doing so will considerably assist in potentiating the normal calm nature of your child.
