Plantar warts are noncancerous growths found on the heel or the sole of the foot. They are caused by human papillomavirus, also known as HPV, that gains access to the body through cuts and scratches. Though plantar warts are not life-threatening, they can be painful to children since they are usually located at pressure points in the feet. Home treatment of plantar warts in children is sometimes successful, but resistant plantar warts will require a doctor to remove them.
Step 1
Wash the foot in warm water with soap. Keep the area as clean as possible. This will help to prevent the plantar warts from spreading to other areas of the child's body.
Step 2
Apply an ointment or patch containing salicylic acid.to the plantar warts. The acid works to destroy viral cells and to allow healthy skin to grow back in that area. Several applications are required to treat plantar warts in children.
Step 3
Place duct tape over the plantar warts after each salicylic acid application. Let the duct tape remain on the skin for six days. The duct tape helps to activate the immune system in response to the viral infection causing the plantar warts.
Step 4
Scrape away dead skin in the area using a pumice stone or nail file. Do not use a nail file that has been used on nails.
