The best golfers hit the ball first in the center of the clubface every time, except when they find themselves in a green-side bunker. When faced with this shot, the goal is to hit 1 or 2 inches behind the ball so that the ball rides out on a layer of sand, which applies spin to the ball so it will land softly and stop quickly. The best players in the world do this with just a few simple adjustments in setting up to the shot.

Step 1

Stand with the ball forward in your setup, playing it even with your front heel. You want to hit behind the ball, so put the ball forward of where your swing naturally bottoms out. Top pro instructor Hank Haney says most players play the ball forward, but not as much as they should.

Step 2

Wiggle your feet in the sand as you take your stance. This lowers your center of gravity and the bottom of your swing arc. Feel the sand texture and depth with your feet so you'll know not to hit too far away from the ball from heavy, fluffy sand.

Step 3

Maintain the flex in your knees so you stay down on the shot. If you straighten up during the swing, you can raise the bottom of your swing arc and crash into the ball.
