Large pores are caused by heredity, age and oil production. While you can't make yourself younger, you can minimize pore size by helping your skin's collagen production. In addition, you can make your pores smaller by helping your skin balance oil production and keeping your skin healthy. If all else fails, look at your makeup choices to help disguise the issue.
Exfoliate
Exfoliating your skin helps remove the dead skin cells that clog pores, causing your pores to look larger. At-home treatments include homemade sugar scrubs and over-the-counter exfoliating products. Buy products that include salicylic acid, as this acid helps penetrate the skin and deepen the exfoliation process. In addition, use products that have small buffing granules to exfoliate evenly. You can also contact a dermatologist for microdermabrasion treatment. This type of treatment not only helps remove dead skin, but also stimulates collagen production.
Peels
A chemical peel helps rejuvenate your skin, states the American Academy of Dermatology. Peels involve using a chemical compound to remove the skin's outermost layers. After a peel, which often causes minor side effects similar to a sunburn, skin is younger looking. Peels smooth skin texture and even out the tone and color of your skin. They also stimulate skin production, making skin appear younger looking for a longer period of time.
Laser Treatment
Laser treatments can make a significant difference in pore size and oil production, states a March 2009 study published by the American Academy of Dermatology. The study reports that use of "photodynamic therapy combined with a long-pulse, pulsed-dye laser and topical 5-aminolevulinic acid" results in a reduction of pore size. Using a 1450 diode laser to penetrate to the oil glands helps not only reduce pore size, but also reduces occasional acne.
Makeup
The makeup you use can help hide large pores. Prime your skin first with a foundation primer that evens your skin tone and prevents makeup from seeping into your pores, making them appear larger. Use either a cream-based or cream-to-powder based foundation rather than a liquid foundation and apply with a makeup sponge. Finish with a light dusting of powder to further disguise your pores and finish evening out your skin tone.
