The NordicTrack Skier has been around for more than 20 years, since the original model's introduction in the 1980s. Many credit it for being the first elliptical machine. The skier provides a low-impact, total body cardiovascular workout. The movement resembles cross-country skiing. Handles are included so you can move your upper and lower body in unison. To increase the intensity of your workout, you can elevate the platform or increase the resistance of the flywheel.
Step 1
Adjust the hip pad. Turn the knob on the hip pad to the left to loosen it. Position the pad so that it sits 1 inch below your belly button. Tighten the knob.
Step 2
Select the elevation. Tilt the skier to one side. Remove the easy-lock pin from the leg assembly. Align the holes at the desired elevation setting. Each hole is a 2-degree increase. The bottom hole is level. Reinsert the easy-lock pin. Perform these steps for the other leg. Make sure both legs are on the same setting.
Step 3
Step onto the skier and position your feet in the toe holds. Press forward against the hip pad.
Step 4
Push the right ski back with your right foot. Your heel should lift off the ski at the back of the movement. Switch your weight to your left foot, pushing the left ski back, as the right ski comes forward.
Step 5
Alternate sliding your feet back and forth.
Step 6
Adjust the leg resistance. Turn the resistance knob clockwise to increase resistance, and counterclockwise to decrease it. Continue skiing while you adjust the resistance.
Step 7
Select the arm resistance. Turn the cord arm knob clockwise to increase the resistance, and counterclockwise to decrease it. Grab the cord handles, one in each hand.
Step 8
Swing your arms opposite to the motion of your legs. As your right leg moves back, your right arm moves forward.
Tips and Warnings
- Learn the movement of your feet before adding the arm motion. If you find yourself sliding away from the hip pad, increase the leg resistance. If you have to press hard against the hip pad to move the skis, decrease the leg resistance.
