If you have curly hair, you probably notice that your hair has an inclination toward dryness or frizziness. Curly hair tends to be more delicate and is therefore more susceptible to damage and split ends. If your hair is curly and dry, you can follow a special hair care routine, making sure to pay extra attention to moisturizing and hydrating your locks.
Step 1
Wash your hair with a shampoo formulated for dry, curly hair every other day. According to author Bernarr MacFadden in his book "Hair Culture," shampooing less frequently is sufficient for people with dry hair, as shampooing too often removes the natural moisturizing oils in your hair and scalp. Use warm water for washing, as water that is too hot will dry your hair out, causing increased frizziness.
Step 2
Condition your hair with a conditioner for dry, curly hair each time you shampoo. Leave the conditioner on for five minutes before rinsing. Follow up with a cool water rinse to close the pores and seal the hair cuticle, helping your hair to become shiny and smooth.
Step 3
Air-dry your hair. Blot any excess moisture out of your hair using an absorbent towel. Apply a leave-in conditioner for curly hair. Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the conditioner evenly and remove any tangles or knots and let your hair dry naturally. Try to avoid using a hair dryer whenever possible, as this causes increased dryness and frizz.
Step 4
Moisturize your hair with a weekly deep conditioning treatment designed for dry, curly hair. In his book "Cosmetology," author Anthony Gonzalez says a deep conditioning hair mask or intensive protein treatment will give you the best results. Cover your hair with a plastic wrap or a shower cap after application so the conditioner penetrates more thoroughly. Leave the treatment on for 20 minutes before rinsing.
Step 5
Use an anti-frizz serum on dry hair to add shine and combat frizziness. Rub a small dollop of the serum between your palms and gently rub your hands over your hair.
Step 6
Trim your ends every six to eight weeks. Getting frequent, small trims will remove split or dead ends without compromising length.
