Finding out that you are going to have a baby boy is an exciting time, full of waiting and preparation. One of the many things on your to-do list is to create a suitable environment in your future son's bedroom. You can go in literally hundreds of different directions when decorating for your baby boy.

Color Schemes

Gone are the days when boys' rooms were limited to traditionally masculine colors, such as blues and reds. Although these colors are still suitable and appropriate, you can use many other colors without making a baby boy's room look feminine. Use tones of yellows, greens, golds, tans and browns not only to keep a gender-appropriate room, but also to match the style and color tones of the rest of your house. Experiment with punches of bright colors, or keep it muted with pastels. Combining colors through stripes or accents ---blues and browns, or yellows and tans --- is also appropriate, and can give an extra punch to your room.

Themes

Part of the fun of having a child is being able to get away with fun themes you would not be able to use as easily in other parts of your home. For example, you can do trains, sports, nature, space, military, nautical, rustic or circus themes in your boy's room, to name a few, and make the room fun for your child as he continues to grow up in the space. Go all-out with your theme, or combine small accents on your theme, such as framed photos on the walls or creative bedding, with more sophisticated or traditional wood finishes and furniture design.

Creative Storage

When designing a baby boy's room, remember that you need a lot of storage --- places for changing supplies, clothing, toys, books and other items that will multiply as your child grows. Use storage such as tubs that can fit under the crib, floating shelves on the walls, closet organizers and baskets to keep the floor space open and the room less cluttered. With many colors and designs on the market, you can customize most of these storage solutions to the style of the room.

Fabric

Fabric can give your son's room character and softness, without becoming too feminine. Many creative fabrics are available, ranging in textures, styles and prices, for use as drapes, pillows, and bedding to give your boy's room character and individuality. Use single-color, striped, checkered, or graphic-print fabrics to match your overall theme and color scheme, or to give pops of color as accents. If you can't find something you like pre-made in a store, you can buy your own fabric, or hire an individual or company to sew you a custom piece for the room.

Entertainment

When decorating your boy's room, remember accents that can double as design and entertainment --- mobiles above your child's crib both look good and will entertain him. Make or purchase other accessories, like lamps that create moving stars across the ceiling, to augment your overall design and delight your son.
