Sending your child to school can be bittersweet. While you might be relieved at the end of summer, it's also a statement of her growing independence. Having the right tools and equipment ensures that your child has a good start to the school year, whether she is entering midyear or heading off to school at the start of the year.

Expert Insight

Most schools and teachers publish a list of school or classroom requirements. If you can't find the information from the school, check with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) or parents' club. The list is generally available on the school, teacher or PTA website, sent home at the beginning of summer or provided with your child's class assignment before school starts.

Clothing and Supplies

Your child needs more than just school supplies. He'll need clothes, shoes and a backpack. Older kids need locker supplies as well, such as a shelf, mirror and whiteboard with pens. For kids in temperate climates, you don't need to rush to buy slacks and heavy sweaters, as summer clothes will often suffice. However, check that summer clothes adhere to school dress code rules. Also check if your school has a specific uniform of colors or basics required for children when they start school. Some schools require that children have certain books or texts at the ready on the first day of school. Some schools request that children come to school with basic classroom supplies, such as tissues, paper towels and hand sanitizer, for example. You don't typically need brand-name gear or hundreds of dollars of equipment. Focus on the basics and add as your child clarifies particular needs. If you have doubts, check with your child's teacher or room parent to see if the need is legitimate.

Benefits

By having the right set of supplies, your child can relax and focus on the curriculum. She doesn't need to worry that she doesn't have the right size binder or is missing glue sticks and tissues. Having what she needs to go to school means that you can minimize the chaos and mania that often accompanies the first days of school.

Time Frame

While school supplies and clothes are available throughout the year, many retailers offer specials at seasonal back-to-school sales. These sales offer significant discounts on basics that your child needs. Keep a list with you when you head out to run errands to take advantage of the sales as they start, often as early as mid-July in many regions.

Standard Package

Not all schools require that you shop for back-to-school supplies. Some schools offer a standard package you can order for delivery at the beginning of the school year. These packages typically cover only supplies in the classroom, however, and not backpacks, clothing or shoes.
