How to Avoid Breast Sagging

Sagging breasts don't rank as high on the worry scale as cancer, pain and tenderness, or nipple discharge, but they're still a concern for women. Your breasts sag when they lose skin elasticity because of factors such as aging, smoking or gaining weight, explains MayoClinic.com. If you're pregnant, ligaments supporting your breasts come under strain as your breasts enlarge, which can also lead to sagging. Sagging breasts aren't just uncomfortable, they can increase the risk of skin rashes and infections.

Step 1

Bathe in warm--not hot--water to reduce the amount of lipids your skin loses during cleansing and prevent dryness. Dry skin is more prone to losing elasticity and sagging.

Step 2

Apply a liberal amount of moisturizer with collagen-building vitamin C or coenzyme Q10 after showering while your skin is still slightly damp.

Step 3

Apply a sunscreen if you're going outdoors to protect your breasts from ultraviolet rays that break down collagen and elastin.

Step 4

Put on a proper-fitting bra and wear it for as long as possible during the day to give your breast ligaments extra support and protect your breasts from gravity.

Step 5

Practice exercises to develop your upper body, including chest muscles and ligaments and back muscles. Visit the American Council on Exercise for tutorials on back and chest exercises. Do two to three sets of 12 to 15 repetitions of each exercise.

Step 6

Maintain a healthy weight by eating the appropriate amount of calories for your height and weight. Exercise at moderate intensity for at least 30 minutes a day five days or more each week.

Tips and Warnings

  • Supplement your diet with vitamins A, C, B3 and E. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, these nutrients provide several skin-healing benefits such as delaying aging, reversing the effects of sun damage and helping to build collagen and elastin. If you're considering breast augmentation surgery to lift your breasts and reduce further sagging, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery recommends looking for a doctor who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The doctor should also have privileges to perform cosmetic plastic surgery in an accredited surgical facility and experience in a wide range of cosmetic procedures.
  • If you're not used to regular physical activity, visit your doctor for a checkup before starting an exercise program. Do not exceed the recommended dose of vitamin supplements. Consult your doctor if you have a medical condition.
