Vestibular Exercises for Vertigo

Dizziness and vertigo can result from vestibular malfunctions. The vestibular system, damaged with disease or injury, no longer relays accurate information about balance and body attitude to the brain, causing dizziness and vertigo. Balance problems and other symptoms may be present. Some people recover from symptoms without any extra measures after a period normal activity due to the brain adapting to its new situation.

Head Turning Exercises

Vestibular deficits cause dizziness when you move your head too fast for the brain to process the signals. This causes vertigo and other symptoms. According to The University of Michigan, this exercise will help prevent dizziness and vertigo by re-programming the brain to process the signals from the vestibular system. To perform the exercise, tape a letter to the wall. Place the letter at eye level. Standing seven feet away, turn your head both ways keeping your eyes on the letter. Perform 10 times, do three sets. Stop, wait a couple of seconds then repeat. Slowly speed up the turning, make sure you keep focused on the letter. When you are doing this exercise with the letter, also perform sets moving your head up and down.

Balance Exercises

Balance is a problem with vestibular problems. Correct balance problems with walking exercises. To perform walking exercises, walk while turning your head side to side and then and up and down. Change speed; walk faster and then slow down. Change directions; walk backward and walk on uneven terrains. This allows your brain to re-program and improves balance. Always start slow in case you experience vertigo or dizziness.
Standing exercises, performed by standing with your eyes closed, moving your feet apart, then move your feet back again. Perform active weight shifts by shifting your weight from front to back and then side to side, first with your eyes open and then closed.

Wii Exrcises

Wii is a popular video game console with an interactive function effective for vestibular exercises. According to Vestibular Disorders Association, the basic plan for treating vestibular issues involves exercises like gaze stabilization and balance improvement activities. The Wii Fit has a tight rope game requiring you to keep your balance on the rope and jumping. In addition, there are also distractions, like birds flying around and moving scenery, causing visual stimulation while challenging balance. The Wii Sports has many games, from bowling to boxing. Used as an adjunct to static and balance exercises, they are effective in preparing you to resume your regular activities.
