If your baby wakes up during the night, it is no cause for alarm. It is normal for babies to wake up several times at night, but your baby can be the exception, according to MayoClinic.com. By practicing specific routines and techniques to help your child get settled before bed, you can give your child the gift of a good night's sleep. At the same time, you'll be getting a better night's sleep, too.

Step 1

Stick with a relaxing bedtime routine that is the same every night, recommends MayoClinic.com. Include activities like reading to your baby, cuddling with her and playing with her. Play the same soft music every night so your child associates it with sleeping.

Step 2

Put your child to bed when he is becoming drowsy, but not completely asleep. Waiting until your child starts to fall asleep will not gradually allow him to relax the same way that a bedtime routine will.

Step 3

Feed your baby during the day only, recommends AskDrSears.com. When your child understands that eating happens during the daytime, he will wake up less frequently to eat at night.

Step 4

Swaddle your baby in a blanket, suggests AskDrSears.com. If your child likes the feeling of being held, wrapping your child in a blanket may make her feel secure during the night.

Step 5

Put your baby in comfortable, soothing bedtime clothing. If your baby's pajamas have any itchy tag or collar, she may wake up in the middle of the night.

Tips and Warnings

  • Warming your baby's sheets up in the wintertime may make going to sleep more comfortable.
  • Consult your child's pediatrician if his sleep patterns seem abnormal.

Things You'll Need
