Depilatory creams remove hair easily and quickly without leaving behind stubble. Since hair-removal creams dissolve the hair shaft below the surface of the skin, the skin feels very smooth after treatment. Additionally, it takes approximately one to two weeks for hair to grow back. When compared with shaving, depilation is a preferred alternative for those who wish to avoid the pain and mess associated with waxing. Although depilation is pain-free, depilatories contain chemicals that may irritate sensitive skin, so it may not be an option for everyone.
Step 1
Soften the skin and hair by placing a washcloth dampened with warm water directly on the skin. Press the cloth down without moving the cloth. Avoid rubbing the skin or irritating it in any way. Leave the cloth on the skin for about 30 seconds.
Step 2
Smooth the depilatory cream on in the direction of hair growth using your hands. Rinse your hands immediately after application until all of the cream is removed. Consult the package label to determine how long to leave the product on your particular skin and hair type. Wait the appropriate length of time.
Step 3
Remove hair and the cream with a warm washcloth. Use downward strokes to remove the maximum amount of hair. Rinse the area thoroughly with warm water.
Tips and Warnings
- Select a depilatory cream specifically formulated for your skin type. Depilatories contain chemicals that could irritate your skin if you use a formula that is too harsh.
- Perform a patch test on a small spot to see how your skin will react to the cream before you use it over a large area. Do not use depilatories near the eye or on broken skin.
