When looking for a job, one of the most important aspects of the job search process is the interview. Interviews give potential employers the ability to get to know you better, as well as get a first impressions of you and how well you will fit into their company. As such, you should try your best to impress the interviewer by setting yourself up to look like the perfect person for the open position.
Grooming
When going in for a job interview, your personal hygiene and grooming should be a top priority. Your hair should be tamed and styled, your body should be free of bad body odor, and your breath should smell good or have no odor at all. Depending on the job being interviewed for, men should go clean-shaven, or at the least should trim their facial hair to make it look professional.
Dress
When choosing clothing for a job interview you should always dress like you want the job. This typically means a dress or business suit for women, and a suit or at least a button up shirt, slacks or khakis, and a tie for men. Jeans should be avoided, as well as any clothing with holes or wrinkles. You should also make sure your shoes are appropriate for what you are wearing, with sandals or tennis shoes not being appropriate for most interviews.
Documents
Always be sure and bring the necessary documents for the interview, including an extra copy of your cover letter and resume just in case the interviewer does not bring a copy with them. Other documents that may be needed for an interview include your driver's license or other official identification, and your Social Security card or passport.
Practice Questions
Before going to your interview, ask yourself common practice questions that may be asked by the interviewer. This allows you to prepare an answer before being asked, which can result in a much clearer and more professional reply. For example, common questions include, what is your greatest strength? What is your greatest weakness? Why do you want this job? What can you contribute to this company?
Time Management
After getting your interview time, always plan to get there at least 15 minutes early. If you know there is going to be traffic, consider leaving even earlier to ensure you get there on time. First impressions are everything, and being late to your interview can quickly take you out of the running for a position. If you are unsure where the building is located for your interview, consider driving out the day before to find the building so you don't get lost on the day of the interview.
Body Language
During the interview your body language should portray that you are interested in the job. This means that you should sit upright and attentive, not slump in the chair. You should make eye contact with the interviewer, and you should place your hands and legs in a position where you are less likely to fidget. Be aware of your body movements so that you can portray confidence instead of fear or disinterest.
