According to the Linus Pauling Institute, biotin is a B vitamin that many metabolic processes require. Many different foods provide biotin and deficiency is rare. However, some people choose to consume extra biotin for its potential health and beauty benefits such as controlling blood sugar in diabetes, reducing hair loss, and strengthening fingernails. Vitamins with biotin include pure biotin supplements as well as supplements that have multiple vitamins and minerals.
GNC
GNC sells its Be-Beautiful complex either alone or as part of its five-component Wholesome Health and Beauty Vitapak for Women. The Be-Beautiful complex contains 3000 mcg of biotin, or 1000 percent of the daily value for biotin, per pill. GNC advertises that this complex supports healthy hair and skin hydration. The amino acids in the complex promote strong nails, and the antioxidants lutein, alpha-lipoic acid and green tea protect your cells against dangerous free radicals to protect against cell aging. Other components in the Vitapak are Be-Whole multivitamin with 600 mcg of biotin, Be-Flexible mobility and stretch formula, Be-Protected fish oil, and Be-Balanced for bone strengthening. The Food and Drug Administration has not tested these supplements to determine whether they meet GNC's claims.
Swanson
Swanson Health Products Premium Biotin provides biotin and no other vitamins or minerals. Each capsule provides 5000 mcg, or 1667 percent, of the daily value for biotin. This is a large dose, but the Linus Pauling Institute states that this dose of biotin is not likely to be toxic. Swanson describes this product as "the beauty nutrient" because it helps the hair, skin, and nails. In addition, biotin allows fat metabolism to occur to help fuel your body's cells. The Food and Drug Administration has not tested this supplement for safety or effectiveness, and you should be careful when choosing a supplement that has several times 100 percent of the total daily value for a vitamin.
Nutrilite
Nutrilite Double X Vitamin/Mineral/Phytonutrient is a multivitamin and mineral that also has phytonutrients, or natural nutrients from plants. Nutrilite promotes this supplement as the world's best, and emphasizes the overall health benefits of a multivitamin, as well as the anti-aging benefits from the antioxidants such as lutein, lycopene, and alpha-lipoic acid. The whole food concentrates in this supplement are from sources like alfalfa, apple, and parsley. The Double X supplement provides 22 essential vitamins and minerals, including 150 mcg of biotin, or 50 percent of the daily value for biotin, per three tablet serving. The Food and Drug Administration has not evaluated the nutritional claims of this supplement.
