Rollerskating is an activity that provides fun and exercise for the entire family. Budget-conscious families will be happy to learn that a roller skating outing is usually quite reasonable and often costs less than a movie ticket. Houston-area rinks range from small, family-owned businesses to Fun Plex, which is part of a larger family entertainment complex. All rinks in Houston offer public skating, as well as private parties.
Locations
The Houston area has 10 roller rinks. Dairy Ashford Roller Rink and the Fun Plex are on the western side, near Mission Bend. Bear Creek Roller Rink is located in the Addicks area. Airline Roller Skate Center and Great Time Skate are in northern Houston. Almeda Skate Center and Pearwood Skate are on the southern side of the city. Skate Zone is in the Cloverleaf area and Lockwood Skating Palace is in the Kashmere Gardens area.
Lessons
Pearwood Skate Center and Dairy Ashford Roller Rink offer skating lessons for all ages. Lessons last 45 minutes. Skaters can sign up for a series of group lessons, or for single class. Private instruction is also available.
Private Events
Houston roller rinks rent their spaces for private parties and events throughout the week. Most of the rinks offer package prices for children's birthday parties that include admission, skate rental and refreshments in the price. Prices average $10 to $15 per child. Several rinks allow private rental for larger parties for a higher price. These private party packages include extras such as DJs and food.
Public Skating
All Houston roller rinks offer public skating on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Most offer night sessions on Friday and Saturday, ending between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday skates are usually held in the afternoon. A few local rinks, such as Dairy Ashford Roller Rink and Airline Skate Center, operate weeknight public skates during the summer.
Prices
Prices range from $2 to $10 for admissions. Most rinks charge an additional $3 for skate rental, although all rinks allow patrons to bring their own skates. Rinks rent both traditional roller skates and inline skates. Rinks that have two skating sessions in a day often offer a discount to customers who buy both sessions.
Things to Keep in Mind
Airline skate center is cash only. Many rinks offer concession stands, although they usually serve food such as hot dogs and pizza. Most rinks will not allow customers to bring their own refreshments.
