Activities for horse enthusiasts in the Fresno, California foothills are abundant due to the available space and temperate California weather. From annual rodeos to family trail rides, there is an activity available for anyone who is looking for an adventure on horseback. You can learn to ride, watch a rodeo or simply enjoy an invigorating walk through a local horse barn.

Rodeos

For over 50 years, Fresno residents and visitors have gotten a taste of rodeo life at the beginning of each May. Coarsegold Rodeo is located at Bohna arena and includes children's rodeo events and a special division of events for young ladies. Kids can enter a barrel racing competition, compete in a roping event or simply let loose at the rodeo dance on Saturday evening.

Trail Rides

Going on a trail ride has always been a popular family activity, since most barns that specialize in trail riding are home to a wide variety of horses. Both beginning and advanced riders can have a scenic ride while honing new skills on horseback. With nearby Fresno backdrops such as the famous Yosemite Valley, the view doesn't get much better for an afternoon on the trail.

Ranch Sorting

Ranch sorting, also sometimes known as team penning, is an activity offered through the Lazy Y arena. There are weekend competitions for this event and many riders maintain their physical strength and agility skills through this and other classes sponsored through the arena. You can also have the ultimate cowboy experience by pushing yourself to the limit with the ranch versatility classes including riding, cattle cut/work & pen, dry reining, trail and conformation.

Collegiate Activities

Students at Fresno State can enjoy the Student Horse Center, which plays host to many horse shows throughout the school year. Outside of the equestrian team, students are responsible for caring for the animals and exercising them.

The college also includes a 28,000-square-foot indoor pavilion, which provides the space for student riders of all types, from basic skills to elite competitive events.

Camping on Horseback

Bridalveil Creek Campground offers specialized campsites for horse owners or renters. Ride a horse into the campsite and enjoy all of the active outdoor experiences of camping along with your horse. Hiking trails and swimming are available, as well as plenty of equestrian trails and open space.
