Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding
Downhill skiers and snowboarders are faced with an abundance of world-class resorts from which to choose. Lake Louise Ski Area is situated in the heart of an awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Site that features runs spread across three mountain peaks. For pure indulgence, travel to Sunshine Village and enjoy over 3,300 acres of terrain on three mountains, with an average annual snowfall of over 30 feet. If an old-school ski resort captures your interest, head to Mt. Norquay. This resort has been a family tradition since 1926, offering terrain for all levels, including groomed runs, bumps, and a terrain park. Norquay offers the only night skiing and lighted terrain park in the area. If you simply cannot choose, consider buying a tri-area lift-ticket that lets you enjoy all three.
Cross-Country Skiing
If you are a cross-country skier, Banff allows you to explore a variety of terrain and several levels of difficulty. The area around Banff National Park provides classic track-set cross-country and groomed skate-skiing trails. A series of visitor centers will provide you with maps, inform you of trail conditions, and provide advice. The trails through the park offer the opportunity to see some of Canada's famous wildlife, with elk, deer, moose, and rabbits commonly seen from the trails. If you are sharing a day with some downhill skiers or snowboarders, you can take the gondola at Sunshine Valley and enjoy a series of scenic trails accessible from the top of the resort.
Nordic Skiing
Enthusiasts who enjoy Nordic styles that extend beyond cross country routes can try some of the region's more adventurous runs. Nordic skiers will relish a selection of un-tracked back country trails, telemark slopes, and rugged ski mountaineering routes. World-class Nordic facilities designed for the 1988 Winter Olympics can be accessed at the Canmore Nordic Centre, just 25 km east of Banff. A word of warning: Few commercial ski areas are as rugged as the Canadian Rockies. Be sure to use solid common sense on the back country trails and listen to the advice provided by park staff.
Other Activities
There are plenty of other winter activities in Banff you may want to consider. The region is home to many truly gorgeous skating rinks. The rinks can be found on ponds and lakes throughout the area, adding a rustic touch and unbelievable scenery to the experience. Two groomed toboggan runs will keep the entire family active during your visit, with one located just behind the Banff Springs Hotel. If you are looking for a truly unique activity, try your hand at dog-sledding. A number of outfitters will teach you the basics and put you in charge of your own dog team. If you are looking for something a bit more relaxing, book your family on a horse-drawn sleigh ride and escape into another time while basking in the fresh mountain air.
Apres Ski
Banff offers adults and families plenty of activities that don't involve hills, ice, or snow. The town's famous hot springs are a unique experience, allowing visitors to soak out-of-doors in soothing hot, 100 percent natural spring water, surrounded by magnificent mountain views. The town features many art galleries, including ones that focus on Inuit pieces. A plethora of restaurant options cater to everyone's taste and budget.
