Enlarged, dilated or open pores occur because of age, genetics or skin type, according to DocShop.com. People with naturally oily and thick skin often develop larger pores than individuals with dry skin. The natural aging process also may cause pores to dilate, as skin loses elasticity with age. Regardless of the cause, it's impossible to permanently shrink large pores. You can tighten them and reduce their appearance for a short time, however, using common household products. Egg whites tighten pores temporarily, and such natural astringents as apple cider vinegar can close the pores, making them appear smaller.
Step 1
Place the egg white in a small mixing bowl. Beat until frothy with a wire whisk or fork.
Step 2
Add the oatmeal and lemon juice to the beaten egg white. Stir until the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
Step 3
Apply a thin layer of the mixture to your face. Leave it on for about 20 minutes. In her book "Return to Beauty," Narine Nikogosian explains that egg whites tighten the pores as they dry, while lemon juice and oatmeal exfoliate and refresh the skin.
Step 4
Rinse your face well with warm water. Use a warm, damp washcloth to help remove the mixture, if necessary.
Step 5
Combine the apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup cold water to create a final, pore-tightening rinse. Splash it onto your skin, and pat your face dry. Repeat the treatment once a week as necessary to help tighten your facial pores.
Tips and Warnings
- In their book "Healing Remedies," Lydia Wilen and Joan Wilen recommend using apple cider vinegar as a final rinse to tighten your pores after using an egg white mask. However, you also can use witch hazel extract. If you don't have either ingredient, rub an ice cube over your skin or use a commercial toner for the same effect.
