Lemongrass, also called oil grass, is an aromatic citrus smelling plant most known for its uses in Chinese and Thai cooking. Lemongrass can be made into an essential oil or highly concentrated plant material through a steam distillation process. According to Health Mad, research suggests that lemongrass has antibacterial and antifungal properties and may help to improve acne conditions and tone tissue. Note that the FDA has not approved herbal remedies for clinical use. Always check with your health care provider if you are concerned about serious skin conditions.

Tips and Warnings

  • Be careful not to touch the top of the essential oil with your fingertips, as this can cause bacteria to spread in the bottle. Essential oils are potent plant material and need carrier oils when applied to large amounts of skin. If you cannot find almond oil, try other carrier oils like jojoba or apricot. Try combining other essential oils to make one mixture for your skin in a bottle of a carrier oil. Simply add a few drops of essential oils such as lavender, rosemary or tea tree oil, all of which can benefit skin due to their antibacterial qualities.
  • It is important to apply skin tests with the oil to see if any allergic reactions take place. If applying the lemongrass oil to your skin burns in any way, discontinue use and wash off immediately.
