While some people are simply prone to getting dark circles under their eyes due to hereditary or hormonal reasons, others aren't. Waking up in the morning and finding dark circles under the eyes can be especially frustrating if you weren't expecting them. Lack of sleep, excess salt or too much sun can all contribute to dark under-eye circles. If you're in the midst of trying to start your day and dark circles are an obvious problem, there's several things you can do to eliminate them.

Step 1

Place a used tea bag that's still damp, but not dripping over each eye. Make sure that the tea bags come into full contact with the darkened area as you lie back to keep them in place for 10 to 15 minutes. Green, black or white tea bags are optimal, as herbal tea bags tend not to be as effective.

Step 2

Grate a raw potato into two piles with a grater and wrap both piles in cheesecloth so the potato shreds can't fall out. Place a potato pack over each eye for 15 to 20 minutes. Catecholase, an enzyme found in potatoes, is commonly used for skin lightening in cosmetics and can help diminish dark eye circles.

Step 3

Place a bag of frozen vegetables over your eyes and lie down for at least 10 minutes. The cold will help constrict the blood vessels and reduce the dark color. If you don't have a bag of vegetables handy, put ice cubes into a sealable plastic bag instead.

Step 4

Dampen a cotton ball with rich almond oil and apply to the under-eye circles. Keep the area damp with the almond oil, reapplying it as it dries for a full 10 minutes. Use caution and do this while laying down to avoid getting the oil in your eyes.

Step 5

Take an antihistamine if dark circles are the result of allergies. Read and follow the manufacturer instructions for dosage.

  • Sleeping in a little, elevating your head while you sleep, and cutting back on alcohol intake can all help to prevent future dark circles under your eyes.
