If you're brushing up your resume, you may find it hard to know what to write in the "job objective" category. When possible, keep the objective short and sweet, limiting it to a sentence or two. You basically want to summarize for the employer what type of position you want to gain as well as what type of organization you're interested in working for.
Avoid "I" Phrases
You may find yourself using "I" phrases like "I want a job working in customer service." According to St. Cloud State University's Literacy Education Online, starting a phrase with a verb rather than an "I" will help you sound more confident and forceful as well as less self-centered. For instance, you could write, "Seeking a personal training position at a small training-focused fitness center."
Use Job Description
Job descriptions can provide you with a wealth of knowledge about what the potential employer wants in an employee. For instance, if the job description highlights, "preference will be given to applicants with rock climbing experience or knowledge," tailor your objective to highlight your skills as pertains to the job description. For instance, you could write the objective, "Seeking a position that utilizes my rock wall instructor certification and 10 years of mountaineering experience at an indoor climbing facility." Within a minute of looking at your resume, the employer already knows that you have the knowledge and experience he's looking for in an applicant.
Use Honesty
If you're looking for a certain type of position, like an internship, a seasonal position or a part-time job, you'll save you and the employer time by stating that right up front. If the employer is hiring a full-time position, or needs someone who is available year-round, you wouldn't want to mislead her or get hired for a position whose expectations you can't reasonably fulfill. Simply state, "Looking for a summer lifeguard position that uses my certification in an outdoor swimming pool setting." This will help you and your employer find the right position to match to your needs.
