Home to more than just Maryland crabs and the beehive hair-do, Baltimore, Maryland, offers a variety of summertime outdoor activities. Each year, the city and its surrounding neighborhoods see more than 5.2 million visitors who spend upward of $2 billion throughout Charm City. The largest season for tourism within the city is during the summer when outdoor activities abound and the city truly comes alive.
Baseball
Camden Yards, home to the Baltimore Orioles, is the summer destination for sports fans, families and Baltimore residents. The Major League Baseball team draws crowds of ticket holders to its bleacher seats to catch the home games.
Since the stadium opened in 1992, fans have enjoyed the team spirit and the love of American baseball in their backyards. With the season lasting from April through October, there is never a shortage of home games to attend.
Take a Dip
One of Baltimore's most recognized celebrities is Olympic gold medalist, Michael Phelps. The renowned swimmer spent his childhood training for the gold in the pools of the city and has made it his passion during the offseason to support the sport in the city.
At Baltimore's Meadowbrook Aquatic and Fitness Center, Michael Phelps offers a swimming school to area youth. In the summer months, the water is full of children and adults who seek to follow in his footsteps.
Run the City
Held every June in Charm City is the Baltimore Ten Miler. The 10-mile race benefits the University of Maryland's Heart Center and welcomes more than 4,000 male and female runners each year.
Beginning at the entrance of the Baltimore Zoo at Druid Hill Park, the course loops in and around the city to Lake Montebello and back. The race begins promptly at 7:30 in the morning, and water stations are found throughout the course. Upon finishing, runners are greeted by a live band and beer garden.
Sail Away
Nothing says summer in Baltimore like the water. Along the city's Inner Harbor, you will find a host of sailboats, sport boats and yachts. Locals and visitors alike enjoy taking in a sail during the summer months.
The Downtown Sailing Center provides affordable sailing programs to city residents and tourists. Programs for introductory, intermediate and advanced sailors are taught at the school in the evenings or on the weekends.
Taught by US SAILING-certified instructors, the Downtown Sailing Center offers students the opportunity to learn from the best.
Take a Hike
Just outside downtown Charm City is Robert E. Lee Park. The wooded park is situated between the Mt. Washington and Roland Park neighborhoods along Falls Road and is home to a a few hiking and running trails.
During the summer months, native dog-owning Baltimorians can readily be found hiking with their canine companions and letting them cool off in Lake Roland. Trail runners enjoy the 4-mile shaded trails to escape from the hot summer sun.
