According to Jay Robb, author of "Fruit Flush," starting a fruit diet is a tasty, natural way to shed extra pounds and improve your level of energy throughout the day. Fruit is loaded with essential nutrients, including potassium, folic acid and vitamin C. It also contains fiber, which helps you feel full and improves digestion.

Step 1

Buy fresh fruits from each of the five colors, namely green, yellow, red, orange and blue. At the beginning of your diet, steer clear of fruit with high acidity, such as grapefruit, which can cause stomach discomfort when consumed in excess.

Step 2

Buy organic or locally grown fruit. Organic fruits are rich in nutrients but may be damaged or even lose their quality when shipped over distance. Local fruit is often fresh and supports your community, but may not be grown organically. Avoid canned fruit for the best results.

Step 3

Stock up on tomatoes, peppers, squash, beans, olives and avocados. Despite the popular belief that all of these are vegetables, they are actually classified as fruits because they contain seeds. Again, look for organic or local versions of these fruits rather than purchasing them in cans.

Step 4

Eat fruits as often as possible--in the morning, at lunch, before and after dinner and every time you are hungry. You will get nutrients and fibers essential for your health and well-being. Fresh fruits are preferable to fruit juice.

Step 5

Drink at least eight glasses of water every day. Fruit diets provide a lot of natural sugars, so avoid sugary drinks such as soda, coffee, mixes or juice.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use a blender or juicer to make homemade juice for midday snacks or even meals. Always keep a piece of fruit close at hand. That way, you will have a healthy alternative to junk food when an unexpected craving strikes.
  • Consult your doctor before beginning any new diet.
