The key to a flatter stomach is eating small, balanced meals and cutting back on sugar. Though exercise promotes weight loss, it does not guarantee a flatter stomach. According to an article on the website of New York's Hospital for Special Surgery, "Exercise Tips For Fat Loss," doing exercises for a specific body part, such as your stomach, does not actually reduce fat from that area. Your genetic make-up controls where you store extra fat and how you lose weight. Abdominal exercises may actually increase belly size, as the abdominal muscles grow larger. While regular exercise is great for your health, eating a balanced diet, avoiding certain foods and having good posture makes your stomach look and feel flatter.

Step 1

Eat smaller portions to flatten your stomach. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, overeating is one of the main causes of indigestion. Indigestion from overeating causes gas, which makes your abdomen look and feel bloated and disproportionate to the rest of your body. For a flatter belly, eat small, frequent meals. If you eat out, get a "to-go" box and immediately save one half to one third of your meal for later. Avoid all kinds of carbonated beverages, which cause gas and bloating.

Step 2

Eat more whole grains, lean proteins and vegetables, and eat less sugar. Kathleen DeMaisons documented persons with sugar-sensitivity in her book "Potatoes Not Prozac." According to DeMaisons, if you are one of many Americans who struggle with weight and mood, you are likely sugar-sensitive. Sugar sensitive people can eat as few as 800 calories a day, and if all those calories come from sugar, white flour and refined starches, they won't lose weight.

Step 3

Eat fresh food and avoid prepackaged diet products. Sugar-free products are unsatisfying and their sweet taste triggers cravings, causing you to eat more. While research is inconclusive, many health conscious people believe that artificial sweeteners and chemical food additives could be bad for your health.

Step 4

Eat slowly to prevent indigestion and overeating. Take time to appreciate the taste of your food. Some cultures give thanks for the energy of the plant or animal that provided them sustenance. Gaining a greater appreciation for your food helps you to see food as a source of nourishment, rather than something you take for granted. Avoid reading or watching TV while you eat.

Step 5

Stand up straight to make your belly look flatter. Slouching causes the gut to bunch up and stick out. Standing up straight makes you look more confident, which adds to overall attractiveness.

Tips and Warnings

  • A flatter belly isn't everything. Spend time learning to love yourself the way you are. Experiment with fashions that flatter a more womanly figure. Use exercise and diet to feel good and be healthy, rather than to look a certain way.
  • Do not start a new diet without consulting your doctor first.
