The tar in cigarettes can leave telltale yellow stains on the hands of the smoker. The stains are stubborn and difficult to remove even after the smoker has given up the habit, but a homemade exfoliating hand scrub can help to remove the stubborn stains. The salt and lemon juice will slough off the top layer of dead, dry skin, and the lemon juice will also lighten stained skin. Olive oil will moisturize the hands, as the salt can be very drying. Avoid using a salt scrub if your hands are chapped or sore.

Step 1

Place 1/2 cup salt in a bowl. Stir in 1/2 cup olive oil and the juice of one lemon. Place a handful of the mixture in a small bowl, and place the remainder in an airtight container.

Step 2

Wash your hands, and then soak your hands in warm water for 5 minutes to soften the skin. Massage a handful of the salt scrub into your hands. Rub gently for 3 to 4 minutes. Rinse your hands with warm water.

Step 3

Pat your hands dry with a soft towel, and then apply your favorite hand lotion. Scrub your hands once every week until the stains are removed. Store the remaining salt scrub in the refrigerator.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
